We kick off Thankful Sunday by shouting out a wave of new listeners from Germany to Japan, plus fresh U.S. cities that found the Dysfunction Junkies and hit play. Japan rocketed into our top four overnight, and we unpack why a sudden binge listen can reshape a show’s momentum, energy, and plans for what comes next.

Welcome to Thankful Sunday, a special edition of the Dysfunction Junkies Podcast. We may not have seen it all, but we've seen enough. And now here are your hosts, Chrissy and Carrie.
KERRY:Hello, junkies. I'm Carrie. And I'm Chrissy. It's Thankful Sunday. Yay! Thankful Sunday. Chrissy, you never really have that heightened enthusiasm. You're just it's enthusiasm with a little Debbie Downer in it. That's me. Well, we have a lot to be thankful for every month. We just keep growing and growing and growing. Where are we now, Chrissy?
CHRISY:Well, I guess we'll start with countries. We've got some new countries on our radar. We're on their radar. We got Germany. Wow. Frankfurt. And in Japan. We have two areas.
KERRY:Yes.
CHRISY:And Kiru. Keru? Uh Gun Gunma. Gunma. Gunma. Keru Guma. Yeah. Japan. Japan. And this one we tried. The computer wasn't cooperating with us. Because we really do want to say these things. We were.
KERRY:We were trying to like go online and listen to the pronunciation, but it wouldn't give us this city name. Yeah.
CHRISY:Maybashi Gunma. Yes. M-A-E. So is it Maybashi?
KERRY:Maybashi. Maybe. Maybashi. Maybe. Maybe it's Maybashi. Maybashi.
SPEAKER_01:Maybashi.
KERRY:Maybashi. Iibashi.
SPEAKER_01:It could be could be Maybashi, too.
KERRY:Maybashi. Kind of like Habashi. Uh maybe. I don't know. Gunma.
SPEAKER_02:Just apologize. I know.
KERRY:We do apologize. And again, as always, if you want us to say the name correctly, give us a drop us a line, shoot us an email, send us a voice message.
CHRISY:Whatever you can. We're happy to get it. So uh coming back uh this way to uh our areas United States United States, we have Brownsville, Pennsylvania, yes, Manville, Texas, Fallon, Nevada. Fallon. Did I forget my eye?
KERRY:Yeah, there's a missing letter there, but it's I think it's an O, but it's it's called Fallon Nevada. Fallon, Nevada. Nevada.
CHRISY:Yes, that used to be stomping grounds for you. Bellevue, Washington. Yes. Big Pine Key, Florida, Church Rock, New Mexico, Arlington, Texas, Kurdlin, Cordlin, Idaho, and Garfield Heights, Ohio.
KERRY:That's right. So part of our new states, though, Idaho, that Kurdlin, Idaho gave us another state. So we're excited about that. Yeah. And what's really interesting is not only is Japan a new country for us, but they're now in the top four of downloads. Yeah, they went gangbest.
CHRISY:We appreciate it.
KERRY:They found us and they binged.
CHRISY:Right.
KERRY:Like instead of binge watching on Netflix, they they binge listen to dysfunction junkies. How about that? So awesome job, Japan. Yeah, thank you. I know. So we're trying to figure out if we have a connection. Like, but I I'm I'm really thinking that it's it's just organically. They they just picked us up.
CHRISY:So if anybody's gonna have a connection, it's gonna be you.
KERRY:Yeah, I know.
CHRISY:I mean, I know Chrissy. I'll take the credit for that. Yes, and you you're welcome to it.
SPEAKER_02:So we I appreciate that. Yeah, Chrissy only comes out like once a year or something.
KERRY:Well, here's the thing they might start listening because of me, but they keep listening because of you. Oh, that's nice. Because you're you're I'm just the laugh track.
CHRISY:Yes, I have a way of uh looking at things that is uh humorous, I suppose. So yes. So what else do we have anything coming up on the uh horizon here?
KERRY:Well, we got the big move coming. That's your move. Uh well, honey, you are in in with me. I know you you are collateral damage to my move.
CHRISY:So I hate to say it. How many times have you moved since I've known you all over the damn place? And this is the first time I'm really being affected when you left.
KERRY:Yeah.
CHRISY:Cause you did you go to Florida first?
KERRY:I I did temporarily go to Florida. I worked in Florida and uh lived there for like six months or so at a time. You didn't come back to Ohio, or did you? So let's see. I was in Ohio, I moved to Florida, moved back to Ohio, temporarily moved to Florida, moved back to Ohio, moved to Nevada, moved back to Ohio, and now we're moving to Utah. And I will not be moving back to Ohio. We're done. You're mean. So, so yes, we have moved a lot, and I do very blessed with a lot of relationships that I've had and people that I know throughout the country, throughout the world. Well, uh I know your goal is to get me to come out. Oh, we're getting you. I'm getting you on a plane. Oh you are coming, you will be out to see me.
CHRISY:Not anytime soon.
KERRY:Oh, honey. We are gonna make this happen. But so, anyways, we do have that. So, which means that we will still keep coming at you every week, but we've got to do things a little differently. So the pressure's on for DJ Nick to get the video thing going so that way we can uh start coming at you both through your ears but also visually.
CHRISY:Yes, when you're doing I guess that, which I'm grateful that we're able to do that so we can maintain and continue to do this. Uh now I'm gonna have to probably put makeup on every once in a while. You don't have to, you just be you, it's your safe spot. I know, but there is a slight part of me that it still continues to be somewhat vain. So maybe a little bit.
KERRY:Then the other thing is obviously we're still in the month of January, so we have been promoting Samaritan's Purse. This is our Junkies Care Initiative for January, and Samaritan's Purse is an international organization that provides relief to people all over the world in times of need and natural disasters. They also help children at Christmas Christmas time by providing toys and needed items. They have many, many different initiatives. So definitely worth checking them out on their website, SamaritansPurse.org. You can also go to our website, dysfunctionjunkiespodcast.com, to learn more about us and to uh see our reach. We have a map that gets updated every week with all the new cities and countries where we're being listened to throughout the world. So you can check out and make sure your city is showing up. What else do we got going on? So let's see, it's the end of the month, end of January. We got February coming up. We got some exciting things in February. Yeah, and it's a short month. It is a short month.
CHRISY:We're not in a leap year, right? No. Uh-uh.
KERRY:I think about that for a second.
CHRISY:No. I don't know when that happens until it happens. And I accidentally write the 28th and it's the 29th? Well, no. It doesn't it get shorter?
SPEAKER_02:No, no.
CHRISY:No, it gets longer. I thought it only got shorter. No, you're just you're you're just going for a laugh. No, I swear, I had to think for a minute. Did leap here mean it's only 27 days? 20. No. Leap. Leap. You sometimes leap backwards, don't you? I don't know. Why why do we have to have this happen? It just throws everything off. It's like with the time change thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Anything to totally mess with you. So 20, like 2028 will be the next time you have a leap year.
CHRISY:One extra day.
SPEAKER_02:Whatever.
CHRISY:It's so it seems so weird. And I know I should probably look up why we even do. I don't even understand why. What weird tribal, like uh ancient culture are we honoring by adding one day into February? It has to do with the calendar, yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Earth going around the sun. It needs to adjust one day every four years.
CHRISY:From my understanding, if we adjust uh as far as what's going on with the planet and the sun, uh we're gonna have just one day every year, and that's it, because things are getting weird.
KERRY:As Nick said, according to Gemini, a leap year is necessary to keep our calendar aligned with the Earth's orbit around the sun, adding an extra day every four years to account for extra time it takes for the Earth to complete its orbit. Going around the sun.
CHRISY:Didn't they say that the ocean's no longer churning or something? Wait, what? It stopped. Uh but it it don't look at me like you don't know what I'm talking about. I've brought this up. Probably you were sleeping and I read it and I got freaked out. And the something with the water. The we're not that doesn't have anything to do with the leap year though. Well, I mean, if the earth is slowing down, d don't they say that the earth is like slowing down, something's happening?
KERRY:Yeah, there is something. Again, thank you to Gemini. I'm on the Gemini today. I have my computer today, people. I did not forget it at home. So I'm stealing DJ Nick's job. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:That's fine by amazing.
KERRY:The Atlantic Meridonial Overturning Circulation, AMOC, is a critical ocean current that has not declined in the last 60 years. The current plays a vital role in distributing heat, moisture, and nutrients across the globe. While the AMOC is currently more stable than expected, it is still subject of concern due to potential impact of climate change. So it is still churning, but there's concerns that it's not churning as efficiently.
CHRISY:So the warm water is going to stay where it's warm, and because that helps bring the warm waters up to where it's cold, and vice versa. So it sounds like we're going to be freezing this way.
KERRY:No, I think it's also what's happening is warmer waters are going up to the cold, and so the cold is not as cold, which is why you have glacier melt.
CHRISY:All I know is that there's a lot of wind episodes that I hate. Things blow around everywhere. I don't remember growing up we had so much wind. But now we get a lot of referring to the fart videos you watch at night.
KERRY:Well, those are getting good. Yeah, it is a little windy.
CHRISY:Yeah.
KERRY:So but we can be thankful for that wind. Uh because thankful wind will bring the seasons of change. For a day.
CHRISY:Yeah, we go from summer to winter here in Ohio within a day.
KERRY:Absolutely. You can move to Utah with me where it's almost always summer.
CHRISY:Well, this is I've noticed I do have a bit of an aversion to uh the cold that I didn't used to have. I used to appreciate it. Yeah. But now I'm just always freezing. I have second guess my need to stay in a cold climate. You you need to you need to come visit me, my new Adobe.
KERRY:All right, everybody. Well, thanks for joining us on this short, thankful Sunday episode. We are so thankful for all of you for listening to us. We appreciate each and every one of you all over the world. We'd love to hear from you, hear your stories, hear uh why you uh listen to us, what makes us part of your routine every week. So shoot us a message on Facebook or Instagram or send us an email or DM us, whatever you want to do. We'd love to hear from you.
CHRISY:Yeah, let us know if you want us to discuss something. I'm open to it always.
